Saints deny report of media rules for Ryan

The New Orleans Saints on Sunday refuted an NFL.com report that new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's contract stipulates that he must get permission from the team's public relations vice president Greg Bensel before speaking to the media.

Bensel wrote via Twitter that the report is "100 percent false."

That could be because the Saints have not even drafted a contract yet for Ryan to sign, according to NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

The Saints announced the Ryan hire on Saturday and the NFL.com report came out later in the day.

Ryan was fired by the Dallas Cowboys at the end of the season. He told ESPN on Saturday that he was "a little shocked" when he lost his job.

"Oh yeah, look, I was a little shocked," Ryan said after attending the Dallas Mavericks home game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night. "I knew they had to do something after an 8-8 season. They choose me to be the guy, sure."

The Cowboys were 19th in the NFL in yards allowed in 2012. Ryan takes over a Saints defense that allowed an average of more than 440 yards per game, worse than any team in the history of the league.
