Rogers makes debut in Galaxy's win
Robbie Rogers became the first openly gay athlete to compete in an American professional team sporting event Sunday night.
Rogers made his Los Angeles Galaxy debut when he entered Sunday's game against the visiting Seattle Sounders in the 77th minute to cheers.
The Galaxy were up 4-0 when Rogers came in as a substitute and the score stood. They were led by forward Robbie Kean's three goals.
"I won't ever forget tonight! I love my new home," Rogers wrote on Twitter after the game.
The 26-year-old came out of retirement to sign with the Galaxy on Saturday. He announced in February that he is gay.
Los Angeles reached a multiyear deal with Rogers after it traded Mike Magee to acquire Rogers' rights from the Chicago Fire.
Rogers had retired from the sport during the winter but decided to make a comeback after speaking with children in April about being a gay athlete. Before he stepped away from soccer, Rogers played with Leeds United in England for more than a year but left the team by mutual consent.
