Buzzing on Yahoo Sports:

Ripken would consider managing

The SportsXchange

Cal Ripken Jr. is open to returning to baseball in some capacity, possibly as a manager, but says he hasn't been contacted about any of the current openings with major league teams.

The Hall of Famer ended his playing career with the Baltimore Orioles after the 2001 season. Since he retired, he has run his own company, Ripken Baseball Inc., and worked as a baseball analyst for TBS Sports.

"I have thought about how cool it would be to manage," Ripken told Rich Eisen of the NFL Network in a recent interview. "And even (Los Angeles Dodgers manager) Donny Mattingly got me thinking about this a little bit more. He said there's nothing like being a player, and coaching is pretty good because you help other people do what it is that they do.

"But managing is the closest thing to being a player, and I've always thought that anyway, internally. Now I'm starting to think about that a little bit more."

Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth told The Washington Post recently that he would like for Ripken to replace retired Davey Johnson in Washington.

"I have said that at some point I'd like to come back to baseball," Ripken said. "And most recently, I said that I'm starting to get an itch to do that. But I'd have to look hard at any opportunity, and so far, I haven't been asked to do anything. So it's very flattering that people think of me that way."

Ripken has no managerial experience, but during a 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles he played in a record 2,632 consecutive games, won two American League MVP awards, went to 19 All-Star Games and collected 3,184 hits, 431 home runs and 1,695 RBIs.

The Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs are looking to fill managerial vacancies.

"So far, I've got nothing new to report," Ripken said regarding job offers. "But that's been the consistency, that I've made those statements. And I am getting a feeling that maybe I'd like to get back in."
