Report: Tigers to interview Ausmus, Renteria

The Detroit Tigers plan to interview San Diego Padres executive Brad Ausmus and bench coach Rick Renteria for their managerial job, CBSSports.com reported Monday.

Ausmus, who interviewed for the Washington Nationals' job that ultimately went to Matt Williams, is expected to meet with the Tigers this week. Ausmus, who spent 18 seasons as a major-league catcher, has no major-league managing or coaching experience. He played for the Houston Astros, Tigers, Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Renteria, who managed team Mexico in the WBC earlier this year, is a managerial candidate with the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners.

The Tigers previously interviewed Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and their own hitting coach, Lloyd McClendon, who also met with the Mariners about their managerial opening.

Detroit is looking to replace Jim Leyland, who retired a week ago.
