Report: Red Sox sign Sweeney to minor-league deal

The Boston Red Sox provided two pieces of news on Friday as they reportedly signed outfielder Ryan Sweeney to a minor-league deal after it was reported that infielder Ryan Kalish will have shoulder surgery.

Sweeney, who turns 28 next month, also received an invitation to spring training, according to the report by WEEI.com.

He hit .260 with no homers in 63 games for Boston last season. He suffered a left-hand injury in July from punching a door at Fenway Park and it required season-ending surgery.

Meanwhile, Kalish will have right shoulder surgery next week, MLB.com reported.

It's unclear how long he will be sidelined, but he is unlikely to be ready for the start of the 2013 season.

Kalish, 24, hit .229 last season.
