Red Sox sign free agent CF Sizemore
Grady Sizemore will attempt a comeback with the Boston Red Sox.
The oft-injured 31-year-old center fielder signed a one-year, major league contract with Boston on Wednesday. Sizemore will receive a guaranteed $750,000, but bonuses could bump his pay up to $6 million.
Sizemore last appeared in a major league game in September 2011, the end of his eighth season with the Cleveland Indians. He underwent seven surgeries since 2009, according to CBSSports.com: two on his left knee, two on his right knee, two for sports hernias and one on his lower back.
From 2006-08, Sizemore made the All-Star Game each year and finished in the top 12 in American League All-Star voting each season. He earned two Gold Gloves in that span while also batting .279 with a .380 on-base percentage, a .499 slugging percentage, 85 homers, 244 RBIs and 93 steals in 481 games.
He played a total of 210 games the next three seasons, hitting .234/.314/.413 with 28 homers, 109 RBIs and 17 steals.
If healthy, Sizemore gives the Red Sox an alternative to rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. in center field. Boston's longtime center fielder, Jacoby Ellsbury, signed a free agent deal with the New York Yankees after Boston won the World Series last fall.
