Report: Panthers interview Shurmur, Jackson for OC job
Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman has yet to have his introductory press conference in Charlotte, but he got down to business Monday, reportedly interviewing two candidates for the team's offensive coordinator position.
According to multiple media reports, Gettleman spoke with Pat Shurmur, who was recently fired as the Cleveland Browns' head coach, and Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach Cincinnati Bengals.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Panthers quarterbacks coach Mike Shula is likely to get an interview, and former Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt also would be a candidate if he doesn't land another head coaching job.
The Panthers need to replace offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who replaced Shurmur as the Browns' head coach last week.
Shurmur, 47, was in charge in Cleveland for two years, posted a 4-12 record in 2011 and a 5-11 mark in 2012. He spent the previous two seasons as the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator after a 10-year stint as an offensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jackson, 47, was the Oakland Raiders' head coach in 2011, leading the team to an 8-8 record. After getting fired, he landed with the Bengals, for whom he worked with the special teams and defensive backs.
Jackson previously was the offensive coordinator for the University of California, USC, the Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Falcons and the Raiders.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera held onto his job this month after a 7-9 season. Carolina won its final four games.
