Report: Harvey opts for rehab over surgery
New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will reportedly try to rehabilitate his injured right elbow rather than undergoing Tommy John surgery, according to a CBSSports.com report.
Harvey, who met with Dr. James Andrews on Monday, will reportedly begin a rehab program now before starting a throwing program in 1-2 months. He was diagnosed by the Mets doctors with a partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament, but hopes to avoid surgery that would likely sideline him for all of 2014. That surgery remains an option if rehabilitation does not go as Harvey hopes.
Harvey finished the 2013 season with a 9-5 record and a 2.27 ERA in 26 starts. The right-hander started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field and was one of the top rookies in baseball before suffering the injury during a start against Detroit on Aug. 24. He was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 27.
The Mets were expected to officially address Harvey's prognosis and treatment plan Tuesday afternoon.
