Report: Bills to hire Marrone
Syracuse coach Doug Marrone is moving on up, agreeing to a tentative deal Sunday to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
Marrone, 48, was 25-25 in four seasons at Syracuse and had his best season with the Orange in 2012 at 8-5.
Marrone has experience as an NFL player and assistant coach. He was offensive coordinator of the Saints from 2006-08.
The Bills also interviewed Oregon coach Chip Kelly, former Bears coach Lovie Smith, former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt and Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton to replace Chan Gailey. Gailey was fired Dec. 31 after posting a 16-32 records in three seasons.
Marrone had a formal interview in Cleveland, but the Browns were waiting for Kelly to decide if they were a better fit than the Eagles.
Marrone was a sixth-round draft pick in 1986 and played his rookie season with the Raiders before one year with the Dolphins and another with the Saints.
He was a college assistant coach at Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee before working as offensive line coach with the Jets in 2002.
