Red Sox make room for Loney, call up Beato

The Boston Red Sox made room for newly acquired first baseman James Loney by optioning outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin to Class AAA Pawtucket, the team announced Sunday.

The Red Sox also recalled right-handed reliever Pedro Beato from Pawtucket.

Loney was acquired Saturday in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The move sent first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, outfielder Carl Crawford starter Josh Becket and infielder Nick Punto to Los Angeles while Rubby de la Rosa and Loney and three prospects moved to Boston.

Loney, 28, was hitting .254 with four home runs and 33 RBIs this year. Lin, who was called up Saturday for the third time this season, was hitting .167 in seven games.

Beato, who was acquired Aug. 16 from the New York Mets in the trade for catcher Kelly Shoppach. He had a 10.38 ERA in seven appearances this season, but has allowed one run in his last six games. Last season, he sets a team record by starting his major league career without allowing an earned run in 18 2/3 innings.
