Red Sox 12, Yankees 8
NEW YORK -- Mike Napoli hit a game-tying grand slam with two outs in the top of the seventh inning and Shane Victorino hit the go-ahead two-run home run with one out in the eighth as the Boston Red Sox stunned the New York Yankees by rallying for a 12-8 victory Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Red Sox faced an 8-3 deficit going into the seventh but no longer had to face New York starter Andy Pettitte after seeing 100 pitches from the left-hander over six innings. Boston's other advantage was that the Yankees did not have top relievers Shawn Kelley (triceps), David Robertson and Mariano Rivera available.
Instead they faced Phil Hughes in his first appearance since being bumped from New York's rotation. The Red Sox inched within 8-4 on a bases-loaded infield single by Dustin Pedroia. Left-hander Boone Logan struck out David Ortiz on a full-count slider that grazed the outside corner.
Ortiz briefly objected to the call by plate umpire Joe West, but eight pitches later, he was celebrating with the rest of his teammates when Napoli hit a 2-2 fastball off the top of the wall in right field for his sixth career grand slam. It was Napoli's third grand slam this season and second with two strikes at Yankee Stadium this season.
Boston did not go ahead at that point, though. That came when Victorino sent a 1-2 slider from rookie Preston Claiborne (0-2) over the left-field wall for his second go-ahead hit in as many nights.
Joba Chamberlain then replaced Claiborne. Chamberlain gave up a bases-loaded walk to Daniel Nava and an RBI base hit to Stephen Drew to cap the scoring.
Rookie Brandon Workman (5=2) recorded four outs for the win and was relieved by Franklin Morales in the eighth with a runner on first. Morales issued a walk to Chris Stewart and threw a wild pitch but with runners on second and third, he fanned Brett Gardner.
Koji Uehara finished up in a non-save situation, ending the four-hour marathon with strikeouts of Alfonso Soriano and Robinson Cano.
Before the Yankees lost for the sixth time in 60 games when leading through six innings, Soriano hit a two-run home run, Eduardo Nunez and Gardner combined for three RBIs while Pettitte allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.
Pettitte struck out the side on 12 pitches in the first inning, ending the inning by getting Ortiz to chase a slider. In the bottom of the first, the Yankees opened a 2-0 lead on Soriano's two-run shot, his 13th home run with New York and 30th overall this season.
After Pettitte allowed an RBI single to David Ross in the second, the Yankees took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when Nunez ripped an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stewart.
The Red Sox cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth when Napoli led off with a double, took third on a flyout to right and scored on Stephen Drew's groundout to first.
New York added two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Gardner's triple got past Victorino's glove as the center fielder attempted a diving catch. Felix Doubront was replaced by Rubby De La Rosa, who struck out Derek Jeter.
After Will Middlebrooks led off the fifth with his 14th home run and third in as many games, the Yankees added two runs in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles by Vernon Wells and Mark Reynolds.
NOTES: Boston RHP Clay Buchholz (neck strain) will take the next step toward returning to the rotation by throwing a bullpen session on Sunday. Buchholz made his third rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday and the Red Sox said the reports were positive. ... Jacoby Ellsbury reinjured his foot on his 10th-inning stolen base Thursday and is day to day. ... New York RHP Shawn Kelley (triceps) threw a bullpen session before the game but is not expected back until sometime next week. ... The Yankees added RHP Matt Daley to their active roster. ... Jeter made his fourth start as a designated hitter.
