Ravens' LB Brown out 4-6 weeks
Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Arthur Brown is likely to be out until training camp after undergoing sports hernia surgery.
"Arthur had a sports hernia surgery right after the rookie minicamp," said coach John Harbaugh. "So, he's recovering from that. He should be fine soon enough."
Brown is a candidate to replace Ray Lewis at one of inside linebacker positions in Baltimore's 3-4 defense. In addition to Lewis' retirement, the Ravens lost Dannell Ellerbe, the other starting inside linebacker last season, when he signed a blockbuster deal with the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
Former Oakland Raiders first-round pick Rolando McClain signed with the Ravens as a potential replacement, but he abruptly retired last week at the ripe old age of 23 without ever suiting up for the Ravens.
The Ravens drafted the All-American from Kansas State in the second round of the 2013 draft in April.
Brown, 6-0, 242, said after rookie minicamp that he had a considerable amount of homework to do before he felt comfortable assimilating to a 3-4 defense. Kansas State played a traditional 4-3 defense with Brown at middle linebacker.
"It's a transition in many ways - that in particular," Brown said after his first practice. "I am up to doing whatever I can to learn from the guys that are here and be a role player."
