Rangers re-sign Lewis to minor-league deal
The Texas Rangers agreed to re-sign right-handed pitcher Colby Lewis to a minor-league deal with a spring training invite, the team announced Saturday.
Lewis will earn a $2 million base salary if he makes the major league team and can potential make up to another $4 million in incentives.
Lewis, 34, has not pitched in the majors since 2012 when he had elbow surgery midway through the season. He also had hip surgery in 2013.
He is expected to begin throwing before the team begins spring training in February.
This year, Lewis made seven minor-league rehab starts -- three in May -- before he was shut down for six weeks because of biceps tendinitis. He resumed rehab in July with four more starts. He last pitched in early August.
Lewis hopes to return to the form that resulted in 26 victories combined in 2010 and 2011 when the Rangers made consecutive World Series appearances. He went 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in the playoffs those years.
