PRESS BOX: Broken leg sidelines Dallas Stars' Robidas

Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas is out four to six months with a broken leg, the team announced Saturday.

Robidas, Dallas' longest-tenured player, left Friday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks on a stretcher after suffering the injury.

At 12:34 of the second period, as Dallas was killing off the game's first power play, Robidas was attempting to block a shot or pass by Chicago center Jonathan Toews when he slid into the end boards. He immediately pointed to his right knee.

Robidas was transported to a local hospital with a leg fracture.

"It didn't look good," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "He's been playing real well. They (him and Brenden Dillon) have been a big pair for us. That was probably one of the only real big negatives. Robi is a battler and he's really played hard and played well this year for us."

Robidas is tied with Brendan Dillon for the team lead among defensemen with four goals and five points in 24 games.

---The Nashville Predators announced Saturday that center Filip Forsberg was placed on injured reserve and defenseman Joe Piskula was recalled from Milwaukee of the AHL.

Forsberg, who has an upper-body injury, has five points (one goal and four assists) and a minus-8 rating in 12 games this season.

Piskula has five assists, 12 penalty minutes and a plus-3 rating in all 18 games for Milwaukee. He was acquired by the Predators from the Calgary Flames in late February. He played in 10 games with the Los Angeles Kings (2006-07) and Calgary (2011-12).

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Georgetown junior forward Greg Whittington was dismissed from the team, coach John Thompson III announced Saturday.

It is not clear why Whittington was kicked off the team, but he has had academic problems in the past and is recovering from knee surgery.

Whittington averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in 13 games last season before getting suspended for academic deficiencies.

He was considered ahead of schedule in rehabbing from a torn ACL during the summer, but it was not clear whether he would be able to play this season.

Whittington was expected to be the Hoyas' top player before the injury, with forward Otto Porter going to the NBA.

It is not known whether Whittington will transfer to another school or try to play professionally.

Without Whittington, the Hoyas are 3-2 with guards D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks combining for more than 35 points per game. Also, UCLA transfer Josh Smith, a 6-foot-8 forward, is averaging 14 points.
