Preseason Preview: Bears vs. Chiefs

Bears
Bears

The Super Bowl game of the preseason is always played in week three which is why the Chicago Bears have some work to do. On Saturday the Bears look to get their first preseason win against the Kansas City Chiefs at home Saturday. After dropping the first two games to Denver and New England, Chicago areas that need improvement.

Winning solves everything and they will need a win Saturday to give their young players confidence in the team’s ability to be successful on the field this season. Here is our official Preseason Bears Week 3 preview.

Bears vs. Chiefs Preseason Preview

Keys to the Game

Do not be surprised if Jay Cutler and the first team are still out there in the middle of the third quarter. At this time in the preseason, this is where most teams look to get it right and focus on execution for their starters.

In Week 2, the Patriots attacked the Bears defense down the middle too many times, including a Jimmy Garoppolo 16 yard touchdown pass. This week it is expected coach John Fox will give his starters a larger workload. With their scheduled Week 1 date with the Houston Texans creeping closer, the Bears look to dial it in against the Chiefs.

It is clear the Bears defensive backfield continues to have problems playing against the pass. Chicago’s defense has allowed the second most passes over 20+ yards this preseason and are ranked in the bottom five in passing yards allowed. This team has to establish some sort of identity on defense.

More importantly, their offensive line needs to be better going into this game. They have given up eight sacks in the first two games and we know that the Chiefs are strong on defense. It has been difficult for the Bears without Kyle Long lining up with the first-string offense. He is expected to be out against KC with a sore shoulder as the Bears are taking no chances with their Pro Bowl guard.

Who to watch for the Bears

Keep your eyes open for Bears running back Jeremy Langford. He is looking more and more like what Chicago envisioned as their number one option. Last week, he exploded for a 34-yard run putting Bears in scoring position. Langford then ran it in for a five-yard TD run which gave Bears a two possession lead.

On defense, look out for Bears rookie linebacker Leonard Floyd. He does not have the starting role just yet in Chicago. Fox most likely will utilize Floyd as a sub for OLB Willie Young. Although he has not started, Floyd has been aggressive in his approach and the Bears staff are seeing improvement week-to-week.

Who to Watch for the Chiefs

With Jeremy Maclin presiding as QB Alex Smith’s first option, the Chiefs are confident Conley can follow as their second primary option.

Kansas City will also get to see DB Phillip Gaines take the field Saturday for the first time since Week 3 of last season. Gaines was placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL in a Monday night loss to the Green Bay Packers last year. Andy Reid has given him the green light, so this will be a good test for Gaines.
