Phils C Kratz goes on DL with knee injury

The Philadelphia Phillies placed catcher Erik Kratz on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury and promoted catcher Steven Lerud from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday to fill the roster spot.

Kratz was injured Saturday in the Phillies' loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He said he felt a pop in the knee, but the extent of the damage is undetermined. Kratz is expected to be examined by team doctors.

The 32-year-old Kratz is batting .229 with eight home runs and 22 RBI this season. He filled in as the starter behind the plate while regular catcher Carlos Ruiz sat out his 25-game suspension for amphetamines and then when Ruiz suffered a strained right hamstring after returning in late May. Ruiz is currently on the 15-day DL.

Until Ruiz or Kratz return, Humberto Quintero will move into the starting role and Lerud will serve as the backup catcher.
