Phillies 13, Mets 8

NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia Phillies batted around twice in the first three innings Friday night to take an 11-run lead and then hung on for a 13-8 win over the New York Mets in front of a crowd of 35,021 at steamy Citi Field. Game-time temperature was 95 degree.

The top eight batters in the Phillies lineup all had at least one hit and five players had at least two hits. Domonic Brown and Delmon Young had three hits each. The first five players in the lineup scored two runs apiece.

Brown, Michael Young and Chase Utley each homered for the Phillies (49-48), who moved over .500 for only the second time this season. Brown, the lone Phillies player with three hits, homered to begin a seven-run third inning while Young's three-run shot ended it. Utley capped the Phillies' scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Kyle Kendrick, staked to the 11-0 lead, cruised to the victory despite allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk with one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings.

Kendrick retired nine in a row, including six by strikeout, after hitting Eric Young Jr. to begin the game. But he allowed five straight hits in the Mets' three-run fourth and was chased in the sixth after allowing four of the six batters he faced to get n base.

Marlon Byrd hit a three-run homer in the fourth and David Wright hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Mets (41-51). Daniel Murphy, Omar Quintanilla and Juan Lagares all had an RBI apiece. Wright, Lagares, Ike Davis and John Buck each had two hits.

Jeremy Hefner's struggles against the Phillies continued as he took the loss for the Mets after allowing eight runs on 10 hits while walking none and striking out three in two-plus innings. The eight runs allowed were a career-high for Hefner while he allowed 10 hits for the third time.

Hefner, who had a 2.14 ERA in his previous 10 starts, lasted less than three innings in a start for just the second time in 32 career starts. The first time was also against the Phillies last Sept. 20, when he allowed seven runs without recording an out. He has a 13.75 ERA in six career appearances (five starts) against Philadelphia and a 3.54 ERA against everyone else.

In a sign of things to come, Jimmy Rollins singled on Hefner's first pitch. One out later, Utley tripled home Rollins and the next four Phillies all singled as Philadelphia took a 4-0 lead.

Hefner appeared to settle into a groove during a 1-2-3 second, but he was chased after allowing four hits to start the third, including Brown's mammoth homer leading off the inning. Young, who struck out in his two at-bats against Hefner, capped the seven-run inning -- the biggest of the season for the Phillies -- and extended the Phillies' lead to 11-0 with a line-drive three-run homer to left off Greg Burke.
