Pedroia, Parra win defensive honors

Adding to the Gold Glove Awards they captured last week, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra were selected the Wilson Defensive Players of the Year, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.

Pedroia won the American League honor, while Parra was the National League recipient.

The winners of the two-year-old award are determined by scouting assessments, advanced defensive statistical analysis and standard fielding statistics.

Pedroia, 30, is a three-time Gold Glove winner. He committed only five errors in 160 regular-season games this year and ranked first at his position in Total Zone Runs, an advanced defensive metric.

Parra, 26, captured his second Gold Glove this year. A right fielder who occasionally saw action in center field, Parra led the NL with 17 outfield assists, a franchise single-season record.
