Padres put Grandal on 60-day DL

The San Diego Padres placed catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 60-day disabled list because of a right knee injury he suffered Saturday, MLB.com reported Sunday.

Grandal was injured when the Washington Nationals' Anthony Rendon slid into him at home plate while trying to break up a double play.

Grandal sustained ACL and MCL damage, although the Padres are not yet aware of the full extent of the injury. It is has not been determined whether surgery is necessary.

Grandal missed the first two months of the season because he was serving a 50-game suspension for elevated levels of testosterone.

He is hitting .216 with one home run this season.

Rene Rivera was called up from Triple-A Tucson to take Grandal's place on the roster. Rivera is expected to share time at catcher with Nick Hundley.
