Packers will not retire Favre's number this season

The SportsXchange

The Green Bay Packers are planning to retire Brett Favre's No. 4 -- but not during this upcoming season.

Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy on Tuesday made it clear that reconciliation with the former Green Bay great was important to the legacy of the franchise. And equally import was retiring Favre's number.

"We're definitely going to retire his number. I really feel strongly that he deserves it," Murphy said via ESPN Wisconsin. "(But) the timing has to be right."

When asked if this season could be the right time, Murphy replied that he doubted Favre's number would be retired this season.

But Murphy did not rule out Favre appearing at Lambeau Field for some other special occasions.

Favre played for the Packers for 16 years and was Most Valuable Player for three straight years. He led the Packers to two Super Bowls and a victory in Super Bowl XXXI. From Sept. 20, 1992, through Jan. 20, 2008, he started every game

But then Favre and the Packers went through an ugly divorce, which saw Favre retire, unretired, try to come back to play for the Packers and get traded to the New York Jets.

Murphy has been adamant that the team retires Favre's number before he enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2016, assuming he is a first-ballot selection.
