Norfolk State 55, Savannah State 45
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Pendarvis Williams scored 16 points, including two huge 3-pointers in a decisive second-half run that carried Norfolk State to a 55-45 victory over Savannah State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday night.
Jenkins, a 6-6 junior guard who led the Spartans (4-5) at 11.7 points per game coming into the night, missed the previous two games because of a sprained MCL.
Norfolk State was nursing a 39-37 lead with a little under seven minutes left in the game when Jenkins started and ended an 8-2 run with 3-point baskets that pushed the lead to 47-39 with 5:21 remaining.
Savannah State (5-4) got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
The Tigers broke a 19-19 deadlock by scoring seven consecutive points, four by Arnold Louis and a 3-pointer by Preston Blackmon, to make it 26-19 with 4:19 left in the first half.
However, Norfolk State cut the lead to 28-25 at halftime before holding the Tigers to 17 points in the second half.
Stephen Wilson led Savannah State with 13 points and Blackmon added 12.
Norfolk State plays next at South Carolina State on Monday, while Savannah State is off until playing at Ohio State on Dec. 12.
