NHL cancels opening two weeks of regular season
The first two weeks of the NHL's regular-season schedule were canceled Thursday, the league announced in a two-paragraph statement.
As the lockout continued into its 18th day and the two sides unable to reach a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement, there's no indication when and if the season might begin. No talks are scheduled between the league and the NHL Players' Association.
There also was no indication whether the games might be made up should the two sides settle their dispute and whether the league would attempt to reschedule all of the canceled games.
The regular season was supposed to begin Oct. 11. The cancellation extends through Oct. 24 and includes 82 games. The players stand to lose $120 million in salary, TSN reported.
"Certainly fair to say that if we reach a deal, we will be looking to reconfigure (the) schedule in a way that would maximize (the) season consistent with health and safety concerns for the Players," Daly said in an email to ESPN.com.
The league and its players are at odds over how to divide $3 billion in revenues. The lockout began Sept. 16 and has wiped out training camp and all preseason games.
