NHL cancels games through Dec. 30

The NHL cancelled games through Dec. 30, The Sporting News reported Monday.

The league previously called off games through Dec. 14.

Cancelling the games is not a surprise move considering last Thursday's collective bargaining negotiations between the league owners and the players' union broke down.

No new talks are scheduled but the two sides have been in contact. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said he hopes negotiations will resume soon.

"Trying to set up something for this week, but nothing finalized yet," Daly told NHL.com.

NHL Players' Association chief Donald Fehr insists the two sides were close to a deal, but commissioner Gary Bettman denied it.

A total of 527 regular season games have been cancelled so far.

When the 1994-95 season lockout resulted in a 48-game schedule, a deal was reached on Jan. 14.
