Nebraska QB Martinez misses practice with toe injury
Turf toe kept Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez from practicing on Tuesday and might prevent him from playing in Saturday's home non-conference game against South Dakota State.
Martinez had a walking boot on his left foot as he left the practice field, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star. The senior also wore the boot to a postgame news conference last Saturday after Nebraska's 41-21 loss to UCLA.
We're going to make sure he's 100 percent healthy and feeling good," Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said after practice. "If he's healthy, he'll play."
If Martinez is unable to play against the Jackrabbits, ranked No. 6 in FCS, the Cornhuskers would be left with inexperienced senior Ron Kellogg III or redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong as their options at quarterback.
Kellogg, a walk-on and the son of former Kansas basketball standout Ron Kellogg, has seen limited playing time in one game this year (completing 4 of 5 passes for 24 yards) and in five games during his career. Armstrong, a highly ranked dual-threat quarterback recruit in 2012, has yet to appear in a game.
Martinez has thrown for nine touchdowns with one interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes in Nebraska's first three games this season. He also has rushed for 101 yards on 32 carries.
