NCAA clears Dixon to play this year for Memphis
Michael Dixon Jr., the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, will be able to play this year for Memphis after the NCAA granted the former Missouri Tigers star a waiver, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday.
Dixon, who averaged 13.5 points and 3.3 assists last year for Frank Haith's squad, faced sexual assault charges for a second time and was suspended in October. No criminal charges were ever filed, Dixon left Missouri and enrolled this summer at Memphis.
Memphis coach Josh Pastner texted CBSSports to confirm Dixon had been granted the waiver.
"He's good to go," Pastner said.
Pastner now will have an experienced and deep backcourt. Dixon will be one of four senior guards, all of whom averaged in double figures last season.
Dixon was granted the waiver based on a previous case. Dez Wells was expelled from Xavier amid a sexual assault investigation before last season, but never was charged. Wells transferred to Maryland and was granted immediate eligibility.
