MRI reveals Nets' Williams has bone spurs
Despite being diagnosed with bone spurs in his left ankle Thursday, Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams said the injury was "manageable."
The injury was confirmed by an MRI, Nets general manager Billy King said, adding Williams is facing offseason surgery.
However, Williams said he plays through the injury, which has caused inflammation in the ankle during training camp. He already has had a cortisone for the pain.
"I think probably the majority of athletes have bone spurs that they deal with at some point in their career," Williams told ESPN on Wednesday. "I don't know if I'll have to have surgery. I'm just saying that might be something that happens after the season. But as far as right now, my ankle feels like new since I got the shots, so hopefully I won't have to have any surgery at all."
The Nets open the season Saturday against the Toronto Raptor in the first regular-season game at the $1 billion Barclay's Center. The original first game against the New York Knicks, scheduled for Thursday, was postponed until Nov. 26 because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the NBA announced Thursday.
