MLB roundup: Yankees place Nova on disabled list

The Yankees will be without 25-year-old right-hander Ivan Nova for at least two turns in the rotation.

The Yankees placed Nova on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI exam showed inflammation in his rotator cuff. He was ordered to rest for at least the next five days and might need more rest after he's reevaluated.

The Yankees were idle Thursday and did not make a corresponding roster move.

Friday's projected starter, CC Sabathia, will be activated from the disabled list before the game.

Nova's spot in the rotation is going to David Phelps, who has impressed since being moved from the bullpen. Nova has a 4.92 ERA with 139 strikeouts. He allowed six runs in a loss against the White Sox on Tuesday and said he felt a "grab" in his right shoulder.

The Yankees could have Andy Pettitte (leg) back in the next two weeks.

--The Padres placed starting pitcher Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list and claimed right-hander Thad Weber off waivers from the Tigers.

Marquis has a fractured left wrist. He'll be replaced on the roster by Brad Boxberger, who was recalled from Triple-A Tucson.

The Padres also announced infielder Jason Bartlett cleared unconditional release waivers and is a free agent.

---The Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Miguel Socolovich off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Catcher Blake Lalli was designated for assignment to create a spot on the 40-man roster.

Socolovich, 26, was 4-0 with two saves and a 1.90 ERA in 28 relief appearances at Triple-A Norfolk.

---Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday against the Angels because of a right groin strain.

Rookie left-hander Drew Smyly will start in his place.

The Tigers reinstated Al Alburquerque and optioned his contract to Triple A- Toledo.

--- Tigers star Miguel Cabrera limped off the field with an ankle injury that apparently was aggravated in Thursday's game.

The severity of the injury is unclear as of Thursday afternoon, and Cabrera is listed as day-to-day.

Cabrera is batting .326 with 31 home runs and an American League-leading 105 RBIs.
