MLB roundup: Selig: No resolution on A's, Giants rights to San Jose

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said on Thursday there has been no resolution regarding the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants' rights to San Jose after both parties made presentations to Major League Baseball's executive council on Wednesday, MLB.com reported.

The A's would like to build a new ballpark in San Jose and play there, but the Giants have not relinquished their rights to San Jose and Santa Clara County. Those rights have been part of the MLB constitution since 1990.

"This is part of the process we're going through, but I certainly can't give you a timetable," Selig told the media Thursday. "As I've said before, it's a complicated, complex issue. People think it's taking a long time, but if you look at all the issues you'd understand it better. The committee I've appointed has spent an awful lot of hours on it and, in fact, it's interesting because every day there are new things that they discover. But the idea is to get it right and if it takes a little longer, that's fine."

When asked whether the A's would be allowed to consider relocating outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, Selig said, "You'd have to ask (A's managing partner) Lew Wolff. That's really his decision to make."

Approval from 75 percent of the other 29 owners is required for the A's to move their franchise out of their territory, whether that be to San Jose or elsewhere.

---One of Darrius McClinton-Hunter's lawyers said a teenage girl has recanted accusations that she was drugged and forced by the football player to perform oral sex on McClinton-Hunter, who is the son of baseball All-Star Torii Hunter, according to a USA TODAY report.

Howard Shapiro, lead attorney for McClinton-Hunter, said he has obtained "audio and written statements from her recanting her accusations."

---The first Brazilian-born player in the Major Leagues will make his debut for the lone Canadian team.

The Toronto Blue Jays purchased the contract of catcher/first baseman Yan Gomes from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace the struggling Adam Lind, who was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Gomes was batting .359 with five home runs in 33 games this season with Las Vegas. The 24-year-old could see playing time at catcher and first base.

---Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie has dropped his suspension appeal, and will begin serving his four-game punishment on Thursday.

He earned the suspension Wednesday for hurling his batting helmet toward home-plate umpire Bill Miller after being called out on a called third strike on Tuesday.

---Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Doumit avoided the disabled list Thursday, though pitcher Nick Blackburn's would up on the shelf with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Blackburn pitched through the injury in Wednesday's start against the Detroit Tigers, and surrendered six earned runs in two innings. He has compiled an 8.37 ERA in seven starts this season.

Doumit, meanwhile, is listed as day-to-day with a left calf strain. Outfielder Ben Revere was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to fill Blackburn's spot on the roster. Revere batted .267 in 450 at-bats last season, but played in just six games in 2012.

---The Oakland Athletics recalled infielder Adam Rosales from Triple-A Sacramento to replace the injured Brandon Inge.

Inge, 28, was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 13, with a groin strain. He is eligible to return May 28.

Rosales is in his third season with the A's. He batted .098 in 61 at-bats in 2011.

---The St. Louis Cardinals acquired OF Jamie Romak from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations.

Romak, 26, was hitting .147 in 11 games with at the Triple-A level, but belted 23 homers at Double-A in 2011.

---The Kansas City Royals replaced two pitchers on Thursday, recalling Louis Coleman and Everett Teaford from Triple-A Omaha, while optioning Vin Mazzaro and Nate Adcock.

Coleman has already shuttled between the minors and majors this season. He has posted a 4.15 ERA in 8 2/3 relief innings this season. Teaford, a lefty, is coming off six shutout innings in his previous outing with Triple-A Omaha. He'll work in relief.

---Top Arizona Diamondbacks pitching prospect Trevor Bauer has been promoted to Triple-A Reno.

The 21-year-old right-hander continues his rapid ascent through the minor leagues. He recorded a 1.68 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings at Double-A Mobile, and could arrive in the big leagues this season.

---The San Diego Padres claimed Eric Stults off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The 32-year-old lefty was designated for assignment earlier this week after he allowed six hits, two walks and four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

---The New York Yankees claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Antonelli, a former first-round pick of the San Diego Padres, was designated for assignment by the Orioles earlier in the week after he hit .204 with Triple-A Norfolk.

---TBS has added the one-game Wild Card playoffs to its postseason baseball lineup.

The agreement was announced Thursday at the end of the owners meetings.

The two Wild Card games in major-league baseball's new format are scheduled to be played Oct. 5, two days after the regular season ends. If a tiebreaker game is necessary, TBS also would provide coverage Oct. 4.

The Wild Card berths boost the number of postseason qualifiers to 10 this year, the first expansion of the playoffs since 1994.
