MLB roundup: Loria's meddling bothers Marlins players
Miami Marlins owner Jeff Loria's meddling with the lineup is angering players, Yahoo Sports! reported Friday.
Loria reportedly mandated that first-year manager Mike Redmond flip-flop starting pitchers Jose Fernandez and Ricky Nolasco for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins, with 20-year-old Fernandez pitching in the first game. Apparently, the switch angered several players, including Nolasco.
When Redmond told Nolasco about the change 2 1/2 hours before the first game, the pitcher was reportedly not happy about it. Typically, veterans get to choose which games of a doubleheader they prefer to pitch, a protocol that Loria ignored.
Loria attempted to force lineup changes last year when Ozzie Guillen managed the team. However, Guillen, a veteran manager, defied Loria's meddling.
The Marlins are off to a league-worst 5-17 record and have scored a league-low 57 runs.
---Baseball commissioner Bud Selig told CBS Sports that he will definitely retire when his contract is up in 2015.
"You can believe it," he said.
Selig was reportedly offered a five-year extension when he accepted a two-year contract last year. When the term expires on Jan. 15, 2015, he will be 80 years old.
Selig has said in the past that he would retire, only to change his mind.
---St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained oblique muscle.
The club called up infielder Jermaine Curtis from Class AAA Memphis.
Adams has not played since Sunday. The move is retroactive to Monday.
He is batting .542 with a 1.634 OPS in 24 at-bats this year.
---Tampa Bay Rays Minor League right-handed pitcher Jose Disla was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball on Friday for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, the league announced.
Disla tested positive for Metabolites of Stanozolol and Nandrolone.
---Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann began his minor-league rehab assignment at Class A Rome on Friday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.
According to MLB.com, he will spend at least 10 days in the minors. McCann had offseason shoulder surgery and also had a recent wrist injury.
---Houston Astros outfielder Justin Maxwell, who fractured his left hand in Tuesday's game, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, the team announced. The Astros have turned to prospect Robbie Grossman as their starting center fielder.
