MLB roundup: Braun may go on disabled list
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was removed in the third inning of Sunday's game because of continuing soreness in a right thumb that has bothered him for weeks and robbed him of his power.
Braun batted just once, striking out in the first inning.
The in-game move suggests Braun may be headed for the disabled list because it came just hour after manager Ron Roenicke noted Braun's thumb situation has become troublesome. Some days his star left fielder appears OK and others you can see him struggling with his swings.
"We've got to figure out what to do there," said Roenicke. "We've got to start going in the right direction with him, and sometimes it's not (going that way).
"I'm hoping we don't have to (put Braun on the disabled list) but we start making gains and he says, 'Yeah, I feel really good today,' and then all of a sudden it's a bad day and a setback.
"We keep going back and forth with this. He's out there playing, hitting third for us, and I expect the Braun that I've seen for the last two years, and he's not the same. He's still getting hits, he's still helping us win games, but he's not that guy that can carry a team like I know he can."
---Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy is recovering from a seizure suffered while eating at a restaurant in Phoenix with his wife last week, according to the Arizona Republic.
McCarthy needed emergency surgery after being hit in the head by a line drive last Sept. 5, and said Saturday he is fine now following the seizure. He slumped over in a booth with his wife, Amanda, calling for help. A CT scan determined McCarthy had not suffered any head trauma and he said he has been put on anti-seizure medication.
McCarthy, who has a 5.00 ERA in 11 starts this season, is currently on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He was told he would have no physical limitations and has continued his rehabilitation.
---The Miami Marlins activated first baseman Logan Morrison from the 60-day disabled list and placed Chris Coghlan on the 15-day DL in moves announced Sunday.
Morrison is coming back from surgery in September to repair a torn patellar tendon suffered July 28 in his right knee and spent the first two months of this season in rehab.
---New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey left Saturday's 20-inning marathon against the Miami Marlins after the seventh inning because of lower back pain, but he plans to make his next scheduled start on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Harvey said his back was popped into place in the trainer's room using a chiropractic maneuver..
"Everything is fine," Harvey said, according to ESPN.com. "I woke up today. Felt good. They told me my start date is Thursday. So I'm ready to go."
---The Philadelphia Phillies placed catcher Erik Kratz on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury and promoted catcher Steven Lerud from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday to fill the roster spot.
. ---The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Alexi Ogando on the disabled list for the second time this season and called up Josh Lindblom form Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday to take the vacant roster spot.
Ogando had made one start since he came off the DL after missing three weeks in May because of right biceps tendinitis. This time, he has discomfort in his shoulder and the team placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Lindblom likely will start Monday night's game against Cleveland.
