Minnesota dismisses LB Edwards

The Minnesota Golden Gophers dismissed linebacker Lamonte Edwards from the team after a recent arrest for theft, a school spokesman confirmed to Minneapolis' Star Tribune.

The paper reported that Edwards was arrested after he allegedly stole an iPhone from another school athlete from a weight room earlier this month. Using tracking software, police traced the phone to Edwards, who initially told the police the phone belonged to his cousin. He later admitted that he took the phone.

Edwards had appeared in 23 games over the past two seasons, recording 25 tackles. He switch to linebacker from running in his sophomore year, and was expected to compete for a starting job this season.
