Mets' Pelfrey likely to have season-ending surgery

New York Mets right-handed pitcher Mike Pelfrey will almost certainly undergo season-ending Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery, the Mets announced Thursday after their 3-2 win over the Marlins.

Pelfrey, who will fly to Alabama Friday to meet with Dr. James Andrews, estimated there is a "99 percent" chance he will undergo the procedure on his right elbow.

It has the potential to end his Mets career after seven seasons. Pelfrey made nearly $6 million this season and will be in line for a raise through arbitration this winter. Considering he was a fringe non-tender candidate even last year, Pelfrey will certainly face the same possibility next offseason.

The right-hander first felt tightness in his right elbow last Saturday, throughout his best start of the young season. Though Pelfrey considered it minor at the time, the Mets took an MRI and sent the images to Andrews.

A former first-round draft pick, Pelfrey has compiled a 50-54 record and 4.36 ERA in seven seasons with the Mets.

This season he was 0-0 with a 2.29 ERA in three starts.
