Injuries just keep hammering the Oakland A's, who are without a third of their lineup and then, Sunday, placed No. 1 starter Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day DL.

McCarthy, who went on the DL exactly one year ago to the day with a stress reaction in his right

shoulder, told reporters that this time, the reason was because he did not bounce back quite as well as he

normally does from his most recent start. McCarthy has been trying to be cautious with his shoulder because

of his long history of stress fractures and stress reactions.

McCarthy told reporters before the A's 6-2 win at San Francisco that he believes he will be ready to go

when eligible to come off the DL on June 2.

The A's called up right-handed reliever Jim Miller from Triple-A Sacramento for pitching depth, but it's

right-hander Graham Godfrey, removed from his previous start Friday after just 48 pitches, who is expected

to fill in in the rotation for McCarthy, whose next scheduled outing was to be Tuesday against the Angels.

Godfrey, who was on the Opening Day roster, is 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA at Sacramento.

In other A's injury news on Sunday, Manny Ramirez took himself out of Sacramento's lineup with a sore

left wrist. Ramirez, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts the previous night, is expected to play for the

River Cats on Monday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
