May Outfielder Rankings

Brad Johnson covers the latest news from the power department including a five homer performance from Nellie Cruz

Welcome to the May outfielder rankings update. Players are ranked for the rest of the season based on a 5x5 scoring format. Included along with the position rankings is an updated top 300. Players are listed wherever they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

Dropping off: Dayan Viciedo (96th), Carlos Quentin (100th), Kirk Nieuwenhuis (121st), Grant Green (123rd), Andy Dirks (125th)

o I’m sure people will think Cruz should be ranked higher. And maybe he should be. Of course, he did follow up a .287-28 HR first half by hitting .249 with 12 HR in the second half of last season. It doesn’t mean the same pattern will happen this year, but we know he’s not this good anyway. One factor to remember here: Cruz is playing right field far more than was originally planned. It definitely increases the injury risk for him.

o That Pederson wasn’t in the top 50 going in was mostly because of his status as the Dodgers’ No. 8 hitter. He’s gotten to hit leadoff with Puig out and seems all set to keep the spot following Puig’s return, No. 34 seems about right for him. He still strikes out a ton, and I wouldn’t expect him to have a great batting average in the end.

o I’m not overly impressed with the Blue Jays’ pitching moves, but sending down Pompey to play regularly in Triple-A seemed like the right call. We’ll see him back later, so he stays in the rankings at No. 105. However, he was getting outplayed by Pillar offensively and defensively.
