Marlins' Oviedo has Tommy John surgery

Miami Marlins reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow Thursday and will miss most of the 2013 season, his agent told ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com.

"We hope everything comes out well and Juan Carlos can return toward the end of next year or in 2014", Oviedo's agent, Andy Mota, said. "Relatively, Tommy John surgery has become a common procedure from which most pitchers come back."

Oviedo, previously known as Leo Nunez, received an eight-week suspension from MLB for age and identity fraud. He ended up not pitching in 2012. After clearing up his immigration status in the Dominican Republic, he returned in May, but hurt his elbow during a minor-league rehab assignment.

He will become a free agent after the season.
