Mannion named Oregon State's starting QB

Oregon State head coach Mike Riley announced on Monday that Sean Mannion will be the Beavers starting quarterback in the season opener against Eastern Washington.

Mannion won a lengthy competition with Cody Vaz for the starting job.

Mannion and Vaz both started games last season. Mannion began 2012 as the starter, but when he was out with an injury, Vaz took his place and performed well, winning both games before Mannion returned.

When Mannion struggled in his first game back in a loss to Washington, he was replaced by Vaz as the starter against Arizona State.

Vaz also started the next game against Stanford before an ankle injury in that game forced him out of that game.

Vaz was the starter in the Beavers' starter in their 31-27 loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl.

Riley did not say whether both quarterbacks might play in the opener.
