Giants confirm top tender for WR Cruz

Victor Cruz isn't getting out of New York without a fight from the Giants, who will use the first-round tender on the restricted free agent slot receiver.

Giants co-owner John Mara said Monday that the Giants would use the right of first refusal mechanism but are focused on keeping Cruz. The first-round tender limits the mobility of the 26-year-old in free agency.

If he receives an offer sheet from another team, the Giants have seven days to match the offer or can opt to receive a first-round pick as compensation for letting Cruz join another team.

The Giants' cap situation could limit them from manuevering to retain Cruz depending on how generous the market is for the undrafted free agent from Massachusetts.

Mara said the team also made a "very substantial offer" to Cruz, who has been lobbying for a long-term deal since training camp began last August.
