Giants' Cabrera suspended 50 games
San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended for 50 games after a positive test for Testosterone, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday.
With 45 games remaining for the Giants, the suspension ends the regular season for Cabrera and would extend into the playoffs should the Giants qualify. San Francisco (64-53) is tied atop the National League West standings with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Cabrera's loss is a major blow for the Giants. He is hitting .346, the second-best average in the NL behind Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutcheon, who is batting .359.
The league said in a statement: "The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Cabrera is effective immediately."
Cabrera, the 2012 All-Star Game MVP who will become a free agent after the season, apparently won't appeal the suspension.
"My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used," he said in a statement through the players' union. "I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and will try to move on with my life.
"I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down."
