Extreme UFC Makeover: Mark Munoz Drops Over 50 Pounds Leading Up To UFC 162

Sometimes we forget that fighters are humans too.

One amazing representation of that is Mark Munoz, who is slated to fight Tim Boetsch at UFC 162 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

It will have been a year since Munoz last set foot in the Octagon. Riding a four-fight winning streak with his sights firmly fixed on champion Anderson Silva, Munoz got knocked out by Chris Weidman last July. Weidman will now challenge Silva in the UFC 162 main event.

Not only did his title aspirations take a major hit, but Munoz also suffered a broken foot in the fight that has kept him out of action.

Falling into a deep depression, Munoz turned to food for comfort, his weight ballooning. As he noted on his website, Munoz was 252 pounds in January of this year… not good for a fighter who competes at 185 pounds.

With Boetsch on tap, however, Munoz, at 35 years of age, managed to bring his weight back down to 199 pounds by June 27. That's well inline with where his weight normally would be a week before weigh-ins.

“Battled through injury, self-doubt, and depression,” Munoz wrote on his website, talking about his personal extreme makeover. “I turned to food for comfort and what I found was more heartache. A never ending cycle of ‘eating because I was sad and sad because I was eating.' I had to find peace and comfort in my faith in God, He shaped my life.

“No matter what adversity you have in your life, you can be transcendent over it with God by your side and you can accomplish all things. Thank you all who believed in, encouraged, motivated and prayed for me! I thank you for you compassion and care! Now I am going in confident to UFC 162 with all I had to work through!”
