Ex-LSU player, NFL draftee wants to try baseball
Former LSU defensive back and New York Giants draft pick Chad Jones is attempting to revive his athletic career in a sport other than football.
Jones has decided to forgo a football comeback after visits with the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints the past few months to pursue baseball, WDSU in New Orleans reported. He was badly injured in a car accident after the Giants drafted him in the third round in 2010 and had worked the past three years to rehab his left leg, which had undergone more than 10 surgeries.
At LSU, Jones was on the Tigers' 2007 national championship football team and two years later pitched and played outfield for an LSU baseball squad that won the 2009 College World Series. Only two college athleties have won a BCS national title and a College World Series.
Jones showed enough baseball talent to be drafted in the 13th round by the Houston Astros after high school and then by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 50th round in 2010.
After the horrific crash that nearly took his life and cost him his left leg in June 2010, Jones worked his way back into shape. In October 2011 after extensive rehab, he ran a 4.84-second 40-yard dash. But the Giants waived him last May after team doctors declared the leg not up to the level physically required for the NFL.
According to CBSSports.com, there was no indication whether Jones has received interest or a tryout from a major-league team.
