His family is donating Calloway’s brain to study the potential effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), according to the report.

“We are all stunned and very saddened to hear of the tragic accident claiming the life of Kyle Calloway,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Kyle’s family and to those who knew him. He was a valued and respected member of our program.”

Calloway, 29, was a standout offensive lineman at Iowa who started 37 of his final 38 games from 2007 to 2009. He was a right tackle coming out of school who also dabbled at guard — the position the Bills tried him at.

He never played in a regular-season game. Calloway got in three preseason contests for the Bills in 2010 before being released, and two more preseason games with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011. That was the last time he was on an NFL roster.
