Drew signs one-year deal with Red Sox

The SportsXchange

Shortstop Stephen Drew has signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports Monday.

The deal includes $500,000 in performances bonuses for the free agent.

Drew, 29, became available when the Oakland Athletics rejected a $10 million mutual option on his contract in October. Instead, Drew received a $1.35 million buyout on his A's contract.

He came to Oakland in August after a trade with Arizona, where he was hitting .193.

Drew had returned to action with the Diamondbacks this past season after suffering a fractured ankle during a slide at home plate in a game with Milwaukee in July 2011.

In 39 regular-season games with Oakland in 2012, Drew hit .250 with five homers and 16 RBI. Between the A's and Diamondbacks, he hit .223 in 327 plate appearances.

Before acquiring Drew, the Red Sox were faced with the prospect of going with light-hitting prospect Jose Iglesias at shortstop next season.

The addition of Drew continues an offseason makeover for the Red Sox, who already have signed Shane Victorino, Ryan Dempster, David Ross and Mike Napoli.
