Done deal: Matthews signs extension with Packers

Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews signed a contract extension on Wednesday reported to be for five years and $66 million.

In an interesting twist, Matthews confirmed the news by tweeting a picture of himself signing the contract that runs through the 2018 season. The team followed with an announcement.

According to, the deal will make Matthews the league's highest-paid linebacker. It likely includes more than $40 million in guaranteed money.

"Congratulations to Clay, who has quickly developed into a core member of our team," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "His accomplishments and the example he sets on and off the field will be vital to our continued success. We look forward to the rest of his Packers career."

Reports indicated the Packers and Matthews had been on the verge of an agreement for days. The team is also working on a long-term contract for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

In 55 starts since Matthews was the Packers' first-round draft pick in 2009, he has 42 1/2 sacks, including 10 last season.
