David Ross waltzed on 'Dancing with the Stars' and fans at Wrigley got to watch

If anyone is wondering why David Ross was absent from the Chicago Cubs World Series banner-raising ceremony on Monday night, it’s because he was busy. He was busy doing an actual waltz on “Dancing with the Stars.”

Yes, Ross and his partner Lindsay Arnold were not eliminated after last week’s routine so they took the stage again, this time performing a Viennese waltz to the song “Forever Young” by Youth Group. The theme of the week was “your most memorable year,” and for David Ross, the answer was easy. In his pre-dance segment, Ross talked about 2016, which was his last year in baseball. He caught a no-hitter, hit his 100th home run, and helped the Cubs win their first World Series in over 100 years. (You can catch his entire pre-dance segment here.)

Ross continues to do an admirable job with all the dances, even one like this week’s where he didn’t really get a chance to show off his personality. You can tell he’s putting everything he’s got into his routines, but this week’s waltz highlighted that Ross is a former catcher who used to squat behind home plate for nine innings every few days. The waltz requires a certain grace that Ross hasn’t been able to pick up yet.

The judges were kind and positive, but handed out some constructive criticisms. Julianne Hough said that the waltz was “a little squatty and a little skippedy” when it needed to be smooth. Carrie Ann Inaba hit the nail on the head when she said that his dance “lost a little control, it was like ‘HE’S RUNNING FOR HOME!'” But everyone loved his energy and his vitality.

Even though Ross couldn’t be at the Cubs ceremony physically, he was certainly there in spirit.

But the Cubs/”Dancing with the Stars” crossover didn’t stop there. Ross had an idea that he shared with the Cubs on Twitter: Since he was watching the Cubs backstage at the show, why couldn’t the Cubs show him at the stadium if there was a rain delay?

And since there was a rain delay, the idea was too good to pass up.

And of course, Ross was so grateful.

And when the scores were announced, the Cubs players got really into it.

As you might be able to see from that GIF, David and Lindsay got an eight from three judges and a seven from the fourth, which comes to 31/40. It wasn’t the best score of the night, but it certainly wasn’t the worst. He’s third from the bottom again, and we’ll have to wait until next week to see if he’ll be eliminated.
