David Ortiz thanks Red Sox fans with touching Instagram post

You can’t blame Boston Red Sox fans who are still traumatized by the team’s American League Division Series loss to the Cleveland Indians. This wasn’t just a normal postseason loss, it was the last time David Ortiz would suit up for the organization.

Ortiz’s relationship with the Boston fans has always been special, and he showed as much when he returned to the field following Game 3 and waved to the fans one final time.

On Wednesday, Ortiz took his appreciation for Red Sox Nation one step further, thanking them in a heartfelt Instagram post.

That sums everything up pretty well. Ortiz reflects on the season, acknowledges things didn’t go as planned but adds that he wouldn’t take it back. He then thanks #RedSoxNation, and assures them the franchise will be fine without him. He tells fans things are in good hands with all the young players on the club, and says the Red Sox were never about one person.

Finally, he thanks his family, teammates, friends and fans for everything. Ortiz ends the message by saying “see y’all around” and then follows that up with “#04 #07 #13.”

No one is quite sure what the future holds for Ortiz now that his playing career is over. He’s expressed a desire to help grow the game of baseball in the Dominican Republic, and he already has an open invitation to rejoin the Red Sox organization in a front office role. Maybe he’ll just choose to take a break for a bit, he’s earned as much after 20 years in the majors.

Ultimately, we would bet on Ortiz rejoining the Red Sox in a new role when he’s ready. Based on his Instagram post, Ortiz has a special relationship with the city and the fans. It’s tough to imagine he’ll stay away for long.
