Daniel Murphy honors Mets GM with Stand Up To Cancer tribute

A classy move stood out among many Tuesday night at the MLB All-Star game in San Diego when New York Mets manager Terry Collins and former Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy held up placards with Sandy Alderson’s name on them during the Stand Up To Cancer promotion between the fifth and sixth innings.

Alderson is the Mets general manager. He was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of the disease last fall as the Mets made a run to the World Series. Alderson has since undergone surgery and endured chemotherapy in his fight against the disease.

It’s probably not a surprise to see Collins thinking of Alderson during a break in the game in which fans, players, umpires and broadcasters held up signs bearing the names of those they care about who have fought or are fighting cancer.

It was a surprise to see Murphy supporting Alderson simply because Murphy chose to leave New York after last season, signing with the Washington Nationals in free agency. Obviously Murphy’s decision had nothing to do with the way he felt about Alderson in New York. Murphy was on base three times for the National League in the 4-2 loss to the American League.

In mid-May, Alderson offered a positive prognosis based on how he felt shortly after his surgery.

“From where we were to where we are today, we’re on the road to full recovery,” Alderson told reporters.
