The Falcons, along with the rest of the NFL, have now opened training camp in preparation for the upcoming 2016 season. Officially the beginning of the football year, coaches are focused on improving different areas of their respective teams in order to compete for a playoff spot and hoist the Lombardi Trophy in the end. Atlanta is no different and one area that coach Dan Quinn is focused on involves the running backs getting involved in the passing game.

During opening day, one of the main focal points was on running back Tevin Coleman and his ability to catch passes out of the backfield. Expected to have an increased role in the offense alongside Devonta Freeman; Coleman’s contributions will have a greater impact if he’s able to capitalize his capabilities. In similar fashion, Freeman was getting work during day two, but opposite him on coverage was his head coach, Quinn.

Following the practice, Quinn spoke about covering Freeman to Andrew Hirsh of Falcons.com. “We’re trying to make sure Devonta made the catch so he has that confidence heading into practice,” Quinn joked. “You feel the hustle; you feel the pressure … It’s that short area quickness that makes him such a challenge for people to cover. He can break laterally and get to full speed really fast. And the guys that can do that—that makes it the hardest to cover.” Hopefully Freeman is able to present similar matchup problems to other defensive secondaries around the league.

Featured wide receiver, Julio Jones, who tweaked his muscle during practice yesterday was able to return for day two. Though he did not participate in the team portion of practice, he was available for individual wide receiver drills. Jones should return to being a full participant in the next couple of days.
