Cubs' Stewart will have wrist surgery

Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart will undergo wrist surgery in about a week and is probably out for the rest of the season, MLB.com reported Monday.

Stewart, who is batting .201 with five homers, will have a small bone removed to alleviate pain in his left wrist.

On June 18, Stewart visited a specialist, who determined that a small bone was rubbing against a larger bone that had been broken a few years ago. Stewart said on his Twitter account that the operation will be performed on Sunday.

"In a way, it's a good thing," Stewart told MLB.com. "It's a relief that something did show up."

It's possible Stewart could return in September, but it's more likely that he'll sit out the remainder of the season.
