Cowboys lose OG Waters to triceps injury

The SportsXchange

Veteran guard Brian Waters is out for the season with a triceps injury, leaving the Dallas Cowboys with uncertainty again on their offensive line.

Waters, 36, started the past five games. He also injured his ribs Sunday at Detroit.

He was coaxed out of retirement with a one-year deal and $1.5 million base salary.

The six-time Pro Bowl selection started 170 NFL games, including all 16 regular-season games and two playoff games for the New England Patriots in 2011.

He sat out last season, and had been discussing a possible contract with the Cowboys since July when he finally agreed to a deal Sept. 4.

The Cowboys had a need for an interior offensive lineman. Nate Livings is out for the season following knee surgery, and Ronald Leary has a chronic knee problem.

Mackenzy Bernadeau will return to the starting lineup in Waters' spot. Bernadeau has been a disappointing since signing a four-year, $11 million free agent deal in 2012.
