Corbin improves to 8-0 as D-backs edge Padres

PHOENIX -- Left-hander Patrick Corbin's name is littered among the National League pitching leaders, but the only number he cares about takes a little more digging to find.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are 10-0 in his starts after a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

"I am just trying to help these guys win and eat up some innings and do my best. When you do that, the team goes out and plays that much harder for you," said Corbin, who improved to 8-0 and drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning single.

"I didn't have my best stuff today, but I wanted to go out there and battle and give it what I had."

Corbin made his 10th consecutive quality start, giving up four runs (three earned) in six-plus innings while striking out five. He had allowed two runs or fewer while pitching six innings or more in each of his previous nine starts, the first pitcher to do that since Ubaldo Jimenez made 12 straight such starts in 2010 with Colorado.

"I never thought of it too much," Corbin said. "You obviously are trying not to let them score. We got the win today, that's all that matters."

Corbin joined Washington's Jordan Zimmermann and Tampa Bay's Matt Moore as the majors' only eight-game winners, and his ERA (1.712) is third behind the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw (1.68) and Zimmermann (1.710).

"San Diego did a good job of really making him work hard, but Patrick competed all the way. We had contributions from everybody," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Martin Prado tied his career high with four hits, getting two doubles and two singles, and his RBI double in the seventh inning gave Arizona (28-22) a 6-4 lead.

Carlos Quentin hit his fifth home run of the season and doubled, finishing 6-for-11 in the series for San Diego (22-27).

The Padres' Kyle Blanks had two hits and two RBIs, and his two-out double in the eighth inning made it 6-5 before Heath Bell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his eighth save.

"We made a little run at them. They made a run at us," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "They got a couple of good key hits. We didn't get the key hits."

Arizona's Eric Chavez hit a two-run home run, and A.J. Pollock had two hits, including his 15th double.

Chris Denorfia, who had two hits, doubled and scored in the first inning before Chavez's second two-run homer in the first as many days gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

Arizona stretched the lead to 4-1 off starter Jason Marquis in the second on Miguel Montero's run-scoring double and Gerardo Parra's sacrifice fly. Montero is 6-for-17 with three homers and eight RBIs in his career against Marquis, who was attempting to become the first Padre pitcher in almost 22 years to win six straight starts.

"They had a pretty good plan in place," Marquis said. "I didn't execute early, and the ball doesn't do the same stuff (in Arizona as) it does in other places. Movement is a little less, so you have to be a little more careful in the zone."

Prado, who had three hits Saturday, finished 8-for-12 with four doubles in the series.

"He's seeing the ball better. That's a good sign for us," Gibson said.

Corbin's throwing error on a infield single led to an unearned run in the fourth inning, when Blanks had an RBI single.

Quentin's two-run homer with two out in the fifth tied it at 4.

Corbin's tiebreaking single in the fifth came against Tommy Layne (0-1), who was making his first big-league appearance of the year after being promoted from the minors on Friday.

NOTES: Arizona RHP Ian Kennedy was scratched from scheduled start in a Monday doubleheader after suffering a laceration on his right index finger when he cut himself with a knife while washing the dishes Thursday. He was pushed back to Friday. ... The D-backs will recall LHP Tyler Skaggs from Triple-A Reno to start the first game Monday against the Texas Rangers. Skaggs, one of the top prospects in the system, is 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA, but he struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in a 6-2 victory over Round Rock on Wednesday. Skaggs was a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation won by Corbin in the spring. ... The last San Diego pitcher to win six straight starts was Andy Benes, who did it from Aug. 18-Sept. 14, 1991. ... The Padres are expected to activate LHP Clayton Richard (intestinal virus) for a start at Seattle on Monday.
